The story of walk to give her a voice

Period Poverty

Period poverty is a pressing concern that affects countless girls and young women across our community. Stigmatisation, lack of proper education, awareness and affordability of period products are integral parts of period poverty. A sample survey shows about 10% of girls in the UK have been unable to afford period products; 15% have struggled to afford them; and 19% have changed to a less suitable product due to cost. Half of all schoolgirls miss a full day of school because of their periods.

For so long, periods have been shrouded in secrecy with most cultures treating it as a taboo topic. This natural phenomenon often arises with a plethora of physical, emotional and mental health issues, some of these issues include depression and anxiety that overlap with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). The inability to afford or access menstrual products can lead to missed school days, lowered self-esteem, and hindered opportunities for these young individuals. To help combat this issue, we are embarking on this Charity Walk to create a positive impact in our community.

Walk to give her a voice - CHARITY WALK

The “Walk to Give Her a Voice” is a charity walk aimed at creating awareness about period poverty, de-stigmatising periods, promoting positive period, and raising funds to empower 3,000 young girls in need with first period kits. The event will be holding on May 28th, 2024, which is World Menstrual Hygiene Day and would include 2k and 4k walks, engaging students, schools, and adults including buggy walkers who wish to champion this cause. The walks are scheduled to take place in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, during the NHS North-East Wellness Festival, engaging Aberdeenshire Council and Education.

Funds raised from this charity walk will be used to help vulnerable girls from low-income homes receive access to First Period kits. These kits are curated with feminine hygiene and self-care essentials that aid in improving her mental health, wellbeing and boost her confidence whilst creating an educative yet fun menstrual hygiene experience for the first year.
